The specialist shared a series of tips for transforming your home without spending a lot of money.
Decorating a space is not always an easy task. To do so, it is essential to be consistent and prioritise functionality over other aspects. Achieving this on a low budget is even more challenging.
Interior designer Camila Solari pointed out that the problem is not the expense, but the design mistakes that go unnoticed. ‘Sometimes we think we need to spend a lot to improve the décor, but what usually fails is not the wallet, but the decisions.’
When there is no clear direction, home décor can be a headache.
The specialist shared some common mistakes. She also presented a series of solutions so that home décor does not represent an excessive expense.
1. Lack of consistency: the enemy of harmony
‘Lack of consistency in decorative style is one of the main problems. If you mix different styles, the space loses harmony,’ she warned. The key is to define one style and stick to it. ‘Choose a style that represents you and suits your personality,’ recommended Solari.
That doesn’t mean you can’t add contrasting pieces. But there should be a common thread: similar materials, colour palette or lines that give meaning to the whole.
2. Visual clutter and saturation: less is more
The second mistake is visual and physical clutter. ‘We’re not just talking about things that are out of place, but also the saturation of objects, unused furniture, and unnecessary decoration,’ explained Solari.
The solution is simple: review the space with a critical eye. ‘Eliminate what you don’t use or what doesn’t contribute to the space. Opt for functional furniture and leave areas free so that the environment can breathe,’ suggested the specialist.
For her, emptiness also communicates: ‘It’s important to leave areas free so that the room can breathe.’ A full room is not necessarily more welcoming; sometimes, it’s the opposite.
In decoration, one of the key principles is to prioritise functionality over aesthetics.
3. Poor lighting: the factor that changes everything
The third mistake highlighted by the interior designer is poor lighting. ‘Light is everything. A poorly lit room feels cold and sad,’ she said.
Both choosing the wrong temperature and not taking advantage of natural light can ruin the atmosphere of a room. “Make the most of natural light. Use light curtains that allow light to pass through. Add layers of general, spot and decorative lighting. And choose the right colour temperature,‘ she explained.
For Solari, light is another layer of design, just as important as materials or furniture. ’It’s not just about lighting, but about creating sensations: warmth, spaciousness, rest or energy depending on the space,” she explained.
