In early October 2025, engineers from Google’s Japanese division unveiled the Gboard Dial Version disc keyboard.
A full technical description of the project and its components is available on GitHub for anyone who wants to replicate it, including STL files for printing the device on a 3D printer and firmware codes.
Instead of traditional keys, the Gboard Dial Version keyboard offers rotating discs, similar to those found on old rotary dial telephones.
‘We made everything as versatile as possible. Keyboards are boring if you can only type on them. In response to feedback from our users, we created a keyboard where you can turn dials to type characters,’ added engineers from Google’s Japanese division.
‘The input and number keys fit comfortably in your hand. The discs prevent accidental activation and ensure reliable input. The time it takes for the dial to return in the opposite direction allows you to think calmly and type,’ explained Google Japan.
